Presidents Mansion
The Presidents mansion is a mansion that has a lot of history, and also has a lot of effects on UA. They started to construct it in 1839, and was fully constructed in 1841. Just thinking about how long it took to build such a beautiful structure. It took them to years to build this amazing structure. It has three floors when looking at it from the outside it is breath taking. You see Giant pillars holding the structure with amazing large windows that would allow sunlight to light the mansion up. Once you go in there is a stair that would take you to the second floor with an amazing decorated receptions. With great lighting. It is very well taken care of. You can just feel inspired by the people who build, and did this place. It is like you are in a dream. A very beautiful place indeed. It is a three stories building with an amazing view you can just sit there for hours, listen to the birds on the trees whistle looking at a magnificent building .To see such a design now a days is very rare. In terms of design this is a Greek design it is one of the most appealing designs. It also holds a lot of significance in Tuscaloosa as its effect. As in how people would be able to learn the history of Tuscaloosa through just a building. Whether the history is good or bad history, is information people can get from the past, so that they can avoid the mistakes that they did to achieve a brighter future. Even in the 1900’s the mansion the mansion looked incredible as shown below.
Even when comparing it to the newest buildings it still looks amazing. It is really worth being called mansion. Looking at It I cannot believe that this picture was taken in the 1900’s.
At first I thought it was just a building, but once I have seen it I changed my mind. To look at a Greek structure nowadays is out of this world. Just think about it they were able to build this huge mansion just in two years. Nowadays two years would seem a lot of time to build a building but back it was labor human labor. The world was not advances like it is today. A lot of people had to work hard every day to build this amazing building. It avoided Destruction during the civil war. For the current time you can see how it people gather to see it a historical place. People hold their weddings there. Graduation ceremonies. It is so beautiful. It is not just a historical place it also holds a great value to the University of Alabama.
The history behind this building is amazing it really teaches you about not just Tuscaloosa but also about how human were, and that human do change over time some changes are better for humanity some are for the worst. As I was there I got to learn about the history of the place. “The history of the President’s Mansion began in 1838 when the university trustees set apart funds for a residence suitable for the president of the young institution. While the plans for the university and its already completed buildings had been designed by William Nichols in the late 1820s and early 1830s, he had left the state and was busy with new projects by this time.” Then as mentioned it was constructed in 1839, and was fully constructed in 1841. The first to live in the mansion was the second University President Basil Manly. He was the first president to live in that mansion he was a very well-known man. As the people who have lives in the mansion in that time has had a lot of effects on the civil war. The second president to live in the house was the president Landon Garland that sources has mentioned “whose tenure would see the destruction of the university in 1865. Disturbed by what he viewed as student discipline problems, Garland advocated the conversion of the university over to the military system as soon as he assumed the presidency. As tensions between Northern and Southern factions became heightened in the lead-up to the Civil War, the state legislature finally acquiesced to his request on February 23, 1860.” To give president Garland more respect he was one of the reasons that the university survived the civil war according to sources “president Landon C. Garland. Upon learning that the campus was burning, she left Bryce Hospital where everyone had taken shelter and raced back to the mansion to defend her property.” She was also able to stop the federal army.
Yet behind all these amazing achievements, there is a history that would open up a wound for everyone. Unfortunately the University of Alabama is one of the places that has owned slaves. And it allowed people who are enrolled in the university to bring slaves to their classes. Now thinking about that would get you thinking the people who put their labor into building this amazing building. Are people who have been living an oppressing life. We do not and will not feel. To be oppressed to be owned to not be able to stop when you want to. We were all born equally is a phrase that we all believe in and acknowledge nowadays, but back then it was different. It all mattered. And their reason for doing that was basically because everyone was doing it. Which is not a reason, and I cannot for such influencing figures on society. To say that society has lead them to do the wrong thing is something this inhumane is a joke. “Originally presented to the university’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusiveness, Brophy’s research revealed that the university and its presidents owned slaves, rented them from Tuscaloosa County residents, approved the purchase of slaves, allowed students to bring their own “personal” slaves to school and claimed “that slavery was the natural order of things”. But to look back on the future and to be able to correct and avoid future mistakes is what this is about. If we look at the president’s mansion not just as a mansion but as a historical value, we can look at it in a sad way. That this was built by people who did not even get credit to their hard work nor and were oppressed in this place, or we can look at it as a progress as look where we were, and where we are today. To be honest after knowing all of that just looking at the building would move my feeling in many different ways. I am sure that it has the same effect on all the residents in Tuscaloosa that is why people hold the place so dearly and they would get married there and have their graduations there. As to show that this place represents a new beginning.
The presidents mansion is one of the most valued places in Alabama. It will always represent the university it is not just some place that the president of the University. It is much more than that to me, and to all who value humanity, and effort. I have been to a lot of places in the past but this has been one of the most interesting places that I got to learn about. Getting to learn about a whole different culture. Its effects on society, and how people were able to deal with it. It is a place that connects past, present, and future. I think for such an important building to be in the university would give students a push to work harder. This gives you the thought that everything around us has great significance. If you look at the building for the first time it will give you the impression that it is just a nice building. But once you learn all the history that would give you a thought of everything. If this 180 year old building has such deep meanings and struggles. Then what about this earth that we live on how much meaning and achievements were people able to achieve. For a Mansion to be able to get me to think this deep. I think it really is a great place. If we all get to look at it in a positive way I am sure that it would also be able to bring society as whole. I am sure you might think I am crazy for saying that a building would be able to get society together. As Booker T. Washington said “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.”
